Abstract: Interaction design is probably a more vital ingredient in product development and digitalization than ever before, as software based functionality is becoming an increasingly important part in all types of product features, and new technology moves the border where an interaction between the human and a computer take place. Not only is there a market demand for renewed experiences, more efficient, stimulating and fashionable, which enterprises seek to deliver in order to attract customers. But as systems, such as vehicle systems, get more and more information intense, the information exchange with the user becomes a factor for safety and successful operation, thus increasing the need for a proficient interaction design.

This research investigates how interaction technologies, interaction design principles, and machine information systems can be used to provide user experiences and efficient interaction for the operator of industrial mobile machines, i.e. off-highway vehicles such as agricultural machines and construction machines. The thesis aims to present the challenges for the different stakeholders involved, with emphasis on the operator of the machines, and methods for gaining detailed insights into operator’s daily behaviour with minimal interference with their work. It seeks to outline the principles of interaction design and the benefits of including design in product or services realization. It will present a tool for practitioners to do exploration in interaction design of vehicle cabin interaction using mixed reality and free head movements, and elaborate on near term interaction using see-through interaction concepts.
