The Concept of Real-Time Database Systems and Their Research Challenges

As the complexity of real-time applications increases, the amounts of data
managed by the real-time systems become massive. Typical applications include
command and control systems, network management, and telephone switching
systems. While the need for efficient techniques for storing and manipulating
data becomes strong, most often there are also timeliness requirements on the
data operations. While conventional databases are equipped with efficient
storing and manipulation techniques, they also introduce several sources of
unpredictability, making them inappropriate for real-time systems with
stringent time constraints. Hence, a real-time database must satisfy both time
constraints and database consistency requirements, and this dual requirement
gives rise to several challenging research problems. In this talk we will
identify and discuss the research problems posed by real-time database
transaction processing and give an overview of the state of the art of
research in the real-time database area.
