Today, many companies have recognised that there is gain to be had, both in time-to-market and profitability, with reusing a platform for many similar products. The platform is the base for developing the specific functionality for each product. However, developing a platform for future products is a very challenging task since the platform has a wide range of requirements, such as ease of use, performance, reliability, extendibility, and ease of maintenance. In this workshop we will get the possibility to gain insight to several different aspects of platform use, development, and maintenance from 4 world-leading companies. Thus the objectives are: - Share knowledge and experience between different companies/applications with respect to development, use and maintenance of a reusable platform. - Discuss issues like the balance between platform and application development. - Discuss how to tune a platform to support different functional and non-functional quality attributes. - Organisational issues when developing platforms to many different systems. - Define common activities to support competence build up in the area. - Common solutions and challenges. - Establish a competence network for development, use and maintenance of platforms.
