The purpose of the presentation is to describe the R&D activities taking place at the Department of Informatics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Two out of five Labs of the Department are active in Software Engineering, namely the Programming Languages and Software Engineering Lab (PLASE) and the Data Technologies and Processing Lab (DELAB). I. Stamelos will present R&D happening at the former, while P. Katsaros will present the latter. R&D activities are mainly funded by the Greek Secretariat for Research and Technology, EU (IST) and various private companies (software houses, consulting companies, etc). Main areas of interest are: Software Quality and Management, Dependability and Security, Open Source Software Engineering and Agile Methods / Extreme Programming.Concerning Software Quality and Management, research focuses on (a) empirical experimentation on software metrics and their understanding and practical use, (b) novel techniques for software cost (effort) estimation, e.g. the use of AI techniques (c) other software management issues (management anti-patterns, intellectual capital valuation). A recently introduced topic of interest is the use of architectural tactics for the design of reusable components. In the field of Dependability and Security, research is focused in (a) quantitative evaluation and trade-offs between dependability attributes (performance, availability, reliability etc) in distributed systems, (b) formal methods in the analysis of safety and security, as well as, in (c) issues related to access control, information flow control, concurrency control and recovery. Within the area of Open Source Software Engineering, research is done on (a) modelling of OSS processes, (b) assessment of OSS quality and comparison with closed source and (c) analysis of knowledge sharing and learning in OSS and introduction of OSS in software engineering education. Finally, the effect of human factors on agile software engineering is investigated through controlled experiments.
