A Workflow-driven Execution Engine for Orchestration of System of Systems

Abstract
Orchestration of collaborating Systems of Systems (SoS) is highly challenging because its constituent systems (CSs) are autonomous, heterogeneous, and distributed. These challenges vary from resource allocation, SoS-level decision making to achieve optimal performance, deterministic behaviour and above all ensuring safety of operations. These challenges also increase drastically when we need to consider that individual CSs
might have components that use/depend on AI.This paper presents a workflow-driven execution engine that externalizes orchestration logic into explicit workflows and executes them through a modular adapter-based runtime. Theengine supports remote service invocation, execution context management, and structured observability. A prototype implementation is evaluated using distributed coffee-service scenarios, including repeated workflow execution, failure handling, endpoint
unavailability, and trace-based validation. The results show that the proposed approach improves modularity, traceability, and reproducibility for SoS orchestration. Our execution engine supports the designers from concept phase to the operational phase by providing a viable platform for simulation and analysis of complex SoS contexts that can potentially mature into digital twins of SoS.
