Abstract

The result of an operation in a real-time system depends not only on the correct functional value, but also on the time at which the result was produced. To build a predictable real-time system, it is important to bound all operations, i.e. determine the worst case execution time. It is also important that the gap between the best case and the worst case execution time is as small as possible. This paper discusses some of the overhead factors in a real-time operating system, and a scheduling co-processor is presented as a method to improve the operating system performance and predictability.
