Industrial automation and power transmission has a long history of dependable operation, and one of the key concerns is safe operation. In the last decades, wired real-time communication has been thoroughly researched, engineered and successfully deployed in large scale. For successful operation and maintenance of large scale control systems, several strategies have proven successful, but how to utilize the benefits of emerging technologies from the consumer market while preserving the availability of distributed control systems? One of the major trends is that more and more devices are networked and the borders of dedicated networks are diminishing. This talk will provide more insight into Cyber Physical Systems used in automation and power distribution, will cover some of the current solutions to existing problems, and how to leverage when introducing technologies like the Cloud, wireless, IoT or even software defined networks in industrial settings.
