The construction industry is plagued by low productivity and has a major impact on the environment. This is largely a consequence of poor coordination of production resources, in comparison with the manufacturing industry, which is due to the very dynamic and mobile processes used in construction.
The vision of this project is to go from today's focus on individual machines and instead view the entire workplace as a coordinated and optimized process, a Construction Factory. This is achieved through innovative use of system-of-systems principles, as well as ideas from Industry 4.0, within this domain. The concepts will be validated in a real-world demonstration of asphalt paving and compactation.
The goal of the project is to develop a comprehensive conceptual description that can be used as a basis for future implementation and industrialization. The focus of the work is therefore on identifying the key actors who need to interact and their incentives; through value-flow and life cycle analysis identify where improvements can be put in place; as well as developing architecture description and information representation to understand which building blocks are available and how to communicate. The project will focus on road construction, with associated aggregate and asphalt production.
