Evaluation Metrics for Communication Protocols in Industrial Software Systems

Abstract
Network convergence, driven by Industry 4.0, has introduced stringent security requirements on the distributed software in industrial control systems. Legacy plant-level protocols, originally developed with limited security considerations, are increasingly exposed to cyber threats. While security solutions such as encryption and message authentication are now being integrated into field-level protocols, they may significantly impact performance properties that are critical in these software systems, including timing predictability and resource efficiency. From the software engineering perspective, understanding these trade-offs requires a well-defined set of performance metrics that enables evaluation and comparison across the device, network, and system levels. In this paper, we present a systematic mapping study that identifies and classifies metrics used to evaluate communication protocols in industrial control systems. Based on an analysis of 20 primary studies selected from an initial pool of 198 identified studies, published between 2016 and 2026, we provide a mapping between the protocols and metrics as well as a bibliographic overview that characterizes existing research and highlights research gaps and opportunities.
