Abstract

Container-based deployment is being widely adopted in distributed industrial systems to support modular and flexible software integration. Ensuring timing correctness in such systems depends on both container execution and predictable network communication. While real-time container platforms offer processor isolation and Time Sensi tive Networking (TSN) ensures predictable and deterministic communi- cation, the timing behavior of these systems across both container and network layers continues to be heavily influenced by deployment decisions, including container placement and inter-container communication. This paper addresses this challenge by providing a timing-aware deployment approach for distributed real-time containers over TSN-enabled infrastructure. The deployment problem is formulated as a mixed-integer linear program that jointly determines container placement and communication under processor capacity, placement admissibility, and network constraints. We perform a set of experiments to show the performance of the deployment approach compared to the state of practice Kubernetes-based approach. In the evaluated experiments, the proposed approach consistently outperformed the Kubernetes-based approach in deployment success; in one evaluated configuration, the successful deployments increased from 10% with the baseline to 88% with the proposed approach.
