production industry quality control is essential. Often testing and calibration are combined and completed when the product meets product speci-fications, such as gearbox performance, payload handling and braking distances (examples from selected application of robot assembly). Mechanical faults of-ten show their presence as deviations compared to a normal sound profile. A manual diagnosis based on sound requires extensive experience. This valuable experience is difficult to preserve and transfer, and often lost if personnel leave an organization. We propose a Case-Based Reasoning approach to collect and preserve experience and enable inexperienced personnel to a make a more reli-able diagnosis based on sound. Sounds from normal and faulty equipment is re-corded and stored in a case library together with a diagnosis. Addition of new validated sound profiles continuously improves the system’s performance. The system preserve and transfer experience between engineers. In a Case-Based Reasoning system, adding cases does not require any training or configuration. The original sound recording can be stored in the case together with other ex-perience, e.g. instructions, additional tests, advice, user feedback etc.
