Julieth Patricia Castellanos Ardila, Associated Senior Lecturer

Julieth Castellanos is an Associate Senior Lecturer and researcher at the School of Innovation, Design, and Engineering (IDT) at Mälardalen University. Her research focuses on developing analysis techniques, strategies, and processes that enable safety by design for safety- and mission-critical systems and infrastructures. Her work also includes the study of industry standards; the interplay between various concerns addressed from a regulatory perspective (e.g., safety, security, cybersecurity, risk management, process improvement, and quality); and compliance management. Research exploring the societal and ethical dimensions of trustworthy AI in safety-critical systems is also part of her interest.

Julieth has also contributed extensively to teaching and supervision activities at Mälardalen University, including the following courses:

  • DVA499: Safety and Security Interplay (2025–present)
Teaching safety and security interplay concepts and practices in complex systems.

  • FLA402: Project Course in Dependable Systems (2022–present)
Teaching safety assurance methods and providing project-based supervision.

  • DVA500: Industrial Systems in Cloud Computing (2022–present)
Supporting students in literature review and academic report writing.

  • DVA437: Safety-Critical Systems Engineering (2020)
Teaching safety analysis methods for engineering safety-critical systems.

  • DVA467: Quality Assurance – Certification of Safety-Critical Systems (2020–2021)
Teaching methods focused on automated compliance checking.

Julieth completed her doctoral studies in the Division of Software Engineering at Mälardalen University under the supervision of Barbara Gallina and Faiz Ul Muram. She presented her licentiate thesis, “Facilitating Automated Compliance Checking of Processes against Safety Standards,” in March 2019 and defended her doctoral dissertation, “A Safety-centered Planning-time Framework for Automated Process Compliance Checking,” in September 2021.

She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Computer Systems Engineering from Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS) in Bucaramanga, Colombia. Julieth also holds a specialization in Software Engineering from Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas (Bogotá, Colombia), a Master’s degree in Computer Science from Malmö University, and a Master’s degree in Software Engineering from Mälardalen University.
