Barbara Gallina, Associate Professor

Barbara Gallina is Associate Professor (Docent) of Dependable Software Engineering at Mälardalen University, Sweden, where she leads the Certifiable Evidences and Justification Engineering group.

Since 2022, she has been running a project on continuous assurance and regulatory compliance in collaboration with Bosch, Grundfos, and more recently TRATON. Since 2024, her research has been embracing environmental and social sustainability (including ethical concerns and mental health). She also serves as expert evaluator for the European Commission.

Within EU-funded projects, she played various roles: technical manager at the global level, work package leader, task leader, and land coordinator.

She has been involved as co-organizer, co-chair, and/or PC member of dependability-relevant conferences (such as ISSRE, SafeComp, and DSN) and workshops (such as SASSUR); reuse-relevant conferences such as (ICSR and SPLC), and process improvement conferences such as EuroSPI.

She has been awarded for distinguished service as reviewer from ISSRE-2021 and SPLC-2025. Dr. Gallina is the author of over 100 papers in the area of dependabiliy engineering, assurance, and regulatory compliance.

She acted as Visiting Researcher at Scania, Sweden (2015-2016) as well as TIERIV, Japan (2025). She acted as Visiting Professor at Université Toulouse Jean Jaurés, France (2025) and at Université Toulouse Capitole, France (2026).

She got a M.Sc. in Computer Engineering and a II-level Master in IT, both from Politecnico di Milano. She got her PhD in Computer Science from the University of Luxembourg. She got her docentship from Mälardalen University.

Barbara Gallina' research interests focus on various aspects of dependable (software) systems engineering, assurance, and regulatory compliance. More specifically, she is interested in developing languages, methods, and processes for: 1) modelling, analysis, justification and certification of complex (computer-based) systems, 2) systematic reuse of certification artifacts (product, process, assurance case-related evidence), 3) multi-concern assurance including interplay of dependability and sustainability, 4) continuous assurance and compliance, 5) assurance and certification-related evidence engineering (immediate, direct, and indirect) 7) safety culture.
